The West Mediterranean is the world's most celebrated yachting ground and for good reason. The French Riviera, the Balearic Islands, the Amalfi Coast and the Costa Brava each offer something distinct: glamour, wildness, culture, gastronomy. What connects them is effortless access, exceptional infrastructure, and a cruising season that stretches from May to October. For those chartering for the first time or the fifteenth, it rarely disappoints.

3 reasons West Mediterranean
belongs on your charter list

1

Every Coastline Tells a Different Story

Monaco's superyacht scene and Corsica's wild calanques are nothing alike; nor are the whitewashed beaches of Formentera and the cultural richness of Barcelona. A well-planned itinerary lets you move between contrasting worlds within a single charter week.

2

Food, Wine & Sea

Provençal fish markets, Mallorcan vineyard lunches, beachside chiringuitos, candlelit terraces in Portofino. Your crew knows where to go. The destinations do the rest.

3

Relaxed Pacing, Flexible Itineraries

Compact cruising distances mean less time underway and more time enjoying where you are. A week in the Balearics, a fortnight coast-hopping from Antibes to Amalfi, or a leisurely Sardinian loop, the West Med adapts to every pace and every group.

Planning your West Mediterranean voyage

July – August

Peak Season

The West Med is at its most electric. Ibiza pulses with nightlife, the Amalfi Coast dazzles, and superyachts crowd the most glamorous anchorages. Expect warm winds, full marinas, and the full spectacle of Mediterranean summer. 26–32°C

May–June, September–October

Shoulder Season

Arguably the finest time to cruise the West Med. The weather is warm and settled, the sea is perfect for swimming, and the crowds thin out considerably. Restaurants, marinas, and anchorages are easier to access, all the beauty, less of the bustle. 22–28°C

November–April

Low Season

Quieter and more contemplative, the West Med takes on a slower rhythm. Some venues close, but the coastline remains stunning and the sailing uncrowded. Ideal for exploratory cruising, cultural immersion, and a more private escape. 12–18°C

What our charter specialists say about the West Mediterranean?

When is the best time to charter a yacht in the West Mediterranean?

The West Mediterranean charter season runs from May to October. July and August are peak months when marinas are busiest, the water is at its warmest, and the social scene is at full intensity, particularly on the French Riviera and in Ibiza. For a quieter, more relaxed experience with the same weather and significantly more anchorage space, June and September are excellent choices. May and early October offer cooler temperatures and a more local feel, ideal for cultural itineraries and off-the-beaten-track destinations.

Which is better for a first yacht charter; the French Riviera or the Balearic Islands?

Both are excellent for first-time charterers. The French Riviera offers the most iconic yachting experience in the world; world-class marinas, exceptional dining, and a well-established infrastructure. The Balearic Islands, by contrast, offer more variety within a compact area: the energy of Ibiza, the natural beauty of Mallorca, the seclusion of Menorca, and the pristine waters of Formentera. If you want glamour and convenience, choose the Riviera. If you want diversity and exploration, choose the Balearics. Our team can help you decide based on your group and timeline.

What types of yacht are best for the West Mediterranean?

Motor yachts are the most popular choice in the West Med, offering speed, range, and the ability to cover more ground between destinations. Sailing yachts suit guests who want a more immersive, wind-driven experience, particularly in areas like Corsica, Sardinia, and the Balearics where the sailing conditions are exceptional. Catamarans are an increasingly popular option for families and larger groups, offering generous deck space and shallow draft for anchoring in protected bays. Our team will advise on the right vessel type based on your itinerary, group size, and priorities.

How long should I charter for in the West Mediterranean?

Most clients charter for one or two weeks. One week is enough for a focused itinerary; a Balearic island loop, a Riviera coast hop from Nice to Saint-Tropez, or a Sardinian coastal route. Two weeks opens up more ambitious journeys: Antibes to Amalfi, a full Balearic circuit, or a combined Corsica and Sardinia itinerary. For guests with more time, the West Med rewards longer expeditions. We design all itineraries bespoke around your dates, your pace, and where you most want to go.

Do I need sailing experience to charter a yacht in the West Mediterranean?

No you don't need sailing experience. Our yacht charters are crewed, meaning a professional captain, chef, and crew are included. You bring nothing but your personal belongings and your appetite for adventure. Our crews are experienced, discreet, and selected for their character as much as their qualifications. If you do have sailing experience and are interested in a skippered or bareboat charter, we can advise on the most suitable options.
